This from CBS58:

3/17 - 12:47 PM

You may experience interruptions in our HDTV feeds for approximately the next 36 hours. We are in the process of installing new HD encoding equipment that should help us manage our bandwidth for our HD & SD feeds more efficiently. We will still have a signal from 58.1, however, it will be in only a SD format.

Thank you in advance for your patience.

Meh -- they couldn't do this during the 10 weeks of repeats they had?

Had to wait til new episodes started airing? :bang:

Bad news. According to JSOnline, it won't be till early Wednesday.

Another example of you can't please all the people all the time.

They're getting the equipment in time for the NCAA tournament so they can show more games in HD...it just may have been a last minute decision to do something good for HD fans.

But even if it wasn't, unlike all of us here who have bucketfuls of money and can go to Best Buy and bring home whatever new toy we want whenever we want one, TV stations have to base major purchases on budget cycles, need and cash flow, and sometimes they have to wait for equipment that may not be available when they order it.

I imagine I'll be losing it later this year, when they 'move' the NY channels to MPEG4. Then, I'll have to suffer through 58's sometimes-boneheaded decisions along with everyone else.

Glad to hear new encoding equipment being installed at ch. 58. I believe WBAY Green Bay has upgraded it's equipment. The main HD and two subs look good compared to 58 now. Keep up the good work Jim Hall. Thanks

Noticed that 58-1 was back in HD tonight. My TV shows it as 720p instead of 1080i now. Was that the big plan, to switch CBS 1080i into 720p to save on bandwidth? It seems to look ok but motion looks a little weird. Sorta like it's in slo-mo at times. Or maybe it's my medication.

Their is no bandwidth difference between 1080I or 720P. They both require about 1.2 gigabits or 150 megabytes of bandwidth.

Uh, I was referring to ATSC's max bandwidth of 19.3Mbs and the fact that 720p can be run at a lower bitrate than 1080i. Hopefully with less artifacts. Last I checked with TSreader 58-1 was running 1080i at about 12Mbs

Checked this morning and found 58-1 running at a whopping 9Mbs at 720p. Hopefully It'll look better than 1080i at 12Mbs.

I watched 'Jericho' out of CBS New York via D*, and I noticed the same weird motion. Maybe it was a national thing...?
