Trouble with Digital OTA Audio into AV Receiver

I have a Mitsubishi 62725 HDTV using for OTA reception of HD channels. I am not able to get sound on OTA HD channels when I connect the coaxial digital audio output from the TV to the coaxial digital input of the AV receiver

The coaxial digital audio cable and coaxial digital input to the AV receiver both work. I can connect the coaxial audio output from a cable box into the AV receiver and the sound works.

TV manual has the following about the coaxial digital audio output:

This output will automatically send Dolby Digital audio from digital channels to a digital Audio/Video receiver. The output will automatically turn off when viewing an analog channel or device.

Some digital cable channls send MPEG-1 digital audio instead of Dolby digital, however, not all A/V receivers can decode MPEG-1 digital audio. This can cause the A/V receiver to produce a loud noise that can damage speakers. For this reason, the TV will automatically turn off the digital audio output when tuned to a channel or device that has MPEG-1 digital audio and send it to the A/V receiver as analog left and right audio from Monitor output.



I would appreciate any comments that might explain why I am not able to get digital audio from the TV to the A/V on OTA HD channels. I have tried on 4-1, 6-1, 12-1, and 58-1 but no success.

Maybe I don't understand your dilemma, you say you have a cable box:

If you have a cable box:
All of the HD locals from cable offer DD output, either 2.0 or 5.1 (depending on programming source).
Using the connection from coaxial digital output from the cable box, if that works for you, I would keep the cable box and coaxial digital audio cable connected to your AVR for audio, period.

If you want only to use the OTA, no cable box and the coaxial audio output from the HDTV set alone:
Mitsubishi wants to use the DD5.1 output (when and only when DD5.1 is output from the network's source) to your AVR and then you get the audio.
There is also an output of red and white RCA jacks (sometimes named "variable audio output") that will send out the 2-channel audio for those digital channels whose source is only that, so connect these outputs from the set to your AVR, too.

Maybe this assists you somehow...who is your cable provider?

I only mentioned the cable connection to indicate both the cable and the coaxial input on the AV receiver work. Cable provider is TWC and not having any issues with that setup - only with OTA.

Not sure if I am reading your response right, but you seem to be suggesting that OTA audio is not always 5.1 and that when a show is specifically broadcast in 5.1 then the coaxial digital hookup should work. Is my understanding correct?

The analog output from the TV to the AV does work.

You probably tried this, but have you set the tv to output digitial in the menu of the tv?

Nothing in the TV manual showing this as a setting or option that I can find. There is a setting in the AV receiver which has been set.

The more I look at the manual I am coming to the conclusions that unless the HD program specifically has Dolby Digital audio, the digital output from the TV is off. I'm assuming that not all HD broadcast is dolby digital, but I'm only guessing.

I believe that all hd broadcasts have a digitial stream. Every devise I've used for hd has a setting in the menu for analog or digitial output.

I just scanned the Hd channels and they are all in Dolby Digital. Most of the prime time programs are in 5.1

Tried the AVS forum? There are probably owners with the same model TV and find your answer there.
