Hello,

I am new to the site, very informative. After reading most of the threads about switching. I think I am about to swtich. But I have question's.

Does D* or Dish still drop? IF so what is the rate of the drops?

Is there anything should know before making the switch?

Thanks any info.

I only lose D* when a real severe storm is moving just to my south, and then only for a little while. I'm thinking that has happened twice, maybe three times this summer/fall.

And I still have my little Radio Shack Double bowtie antenna set up for 58-1, so when it gets bad, I can still watch a local station OTA if I'm not out on the porch watching the storm.

After the next wave of new HD channels debuts tomorrow on D*, I'm not sure why anyone would chose Dish...but I'm sure someone here will have an opinion. ;)

In the 7+ years I've had D* I've had a loss of signal a lot less than when I had TWC. Come over from the dark side, you'll love it, especially if you have HD.

I've been with D* since 96.

Rain/Snow fade is really not an issue. This year I would say I've lost service for no more than an hour totally throughout the year.

Although over the weekend I had a first...

A low flying airplane interrupted the signal as it passed between my dish and the signal path.

Never had that before!

I've had Dish Network for a few months now and have only lost service once during extreme storms. The risk of losing programming for a few minutes is worth it when you compare all the additional HD programming you get.

Good luck in your decision.

I just got off the phone with D* and here I come!!!!

As for TWC, all I have to say is SEE YA LATER ALLIGATOR!:D :D :D :D

Now all we have to do is watch all the shows stored up on the DVR before I throw that old boat anchor off the ship.

On the down side, I will have to teach the girlfriend how to run the new equipment. I should be finished with that class about the time the next generation of DVR is released.

I jumped ship as well to Direct TV, Install is set for this Thursday. Question If I spend time at someone else's house that also has direct tv can I just plug my box in and enjoy the channels I pay for on my box?

Yes it will work and if you are within 150 miles or so you will get the locals as well.

I have to say that this is not "legal" in D*'s eyes. But it still works ;)

I have a box I bring with us for our camper and set up a dish and the works anywhere we go, but this is legal for an RV use.

Anyone know if I can I lie to the sat box about my zip code and get Chicago's locals instead? It kinda sucks that I get all the HD locals except CW and CBS. I want HD smallville without having to use a OTA.

The box doesn't care. It's based on your billing address. The box is told which to get in the download stream. That's why it takes a few minutes sometimes to "authorize" a receiver.

This might not work. The locals are sent from Spot-beams I believe and the area that spots are sent to is a focused area and might not extend to where you are. You might be able to try it once and see.

Let's just say it "should" work.

Here's why I say this,

Billing address in Milwaukee, Receiver currently in Door County near Egg Harbor, in a 3 season Park Model "trailer" No problem watching Milwaukee Locals.
