HDTV Suggestion

i've read that the sweet spot right now, especially for gaming (PS3), is 720p. if i get a decent 720p HDTV (samsung 40" LNS-4051), how long will it last with so many new technology on the horizon, like:

1080p
cablecard 2.0
HDMI 1.3

will my future PS3 be happy with the samsung LNS-4051? or should i get a cheaper 32" HDTV and wait to upgrade in a couple of years?

720P is old news. For PS3 & Blu-Ray you need 1080P.

The smaller the screen size the less you will notice the difference between 720p and 1080p.

Waiting for technology is a double edged sword.

The answer also relates to how far away from the set you'll be viewing it.

Personally, I'd go for a larger set @ 720p rather than a smaller set at 1080p/i. The width of vision makes games much more immersive than the increase in resolution.

Anything you buy today will be outdated in a couple of years, that's just the nature of electronics. Just realize that going in, but don't let it keep you from enjoy it today.

Blu-Ray and PSP both do 1080p. To take advantage of the full capabilities of the systems you would need a 1080p set.

Althought there have been some rumblings on game forums that PS3 will not have many/if any 1080p games created for it because price concsious developers can use the 720p format and the game design will relate closer to the xbox's 720p. The only PS3 game in the works currently is GranTurismo which may never see the light of day.

I read today (on ign.com) that the PS3 download service will be releasing a version of Tekken 5 next year that will run in full 1080p, so they will do their best to make the video look it's best whenever feasible.

As you see I noted the questions with 1080p games in my post as well. It is still going to play the Blu-Ray movies in 1080p though (at least the 60g will, no hdmi on 20g).

So if you want to see a 1080p movie from your ps3 you will need a 1080p set. As for 1080p games, I wouldn't hold your breath for the time being but you never know.

BTW - there is no need to start bashing other posters intelligence. If you could link them to a site where your claims are verified. Ie a reputable news source, sony company announcement, (no, xbox forums don't count) etc... it would probably go a lot further than telling them they are "sad." for believing the marketing hype of sony.

I've been hemming and hawing over the LNS-4051 and it's on sale this week at CC for $1399. The only drawback for me is it doesn't have a cable card slot. Since it's going on a bedroom dresser, the cable card makes my life easier for HD viewing.

There is a newer LG 42" with a built in HD DVR but it gets mixed reviews.
