a couple of important notes:
the upgrade is being rolled out. you can try forcing an upgrade with the remote code, but I don't know if that is guaranteed. otherwise the rollout should take a week at most if you don't already have it.
OTA HD will take up considerably more space than MPEG-4 HD. Just a bit under twice as much actually (50 hours MPEG-4, 30 hours MPEG-2). IMHO WTMJ4 looks kind of bad over DirecTV, but 6 and 12 both look good enough that I'll keep grabbing those over satellite. so if you are recording MPEG-2 OTA, make sure to remember you'll run out of space much faster.
you need to activate OTA to receive it. with the antenna connected go to Menu->Setup and follow the prompts.
more can be found here (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=71203). I just wanted to remember to point out that DirecTV locals will take less space, but in some cases (channel 4) might look a bit worse than OTA.

Most importantly it will allow people to get CBS58 in HD until they get carried over the satellite.

How is the H20 versus the Tivo HR10-250? I have the Tivo right now (phoneline unplugged still at version 3.1f) and was considering the switch once the OTA is activated. Have people been getting these upgrades for free with a contract extension?

all updates on the D* boxes are free.
I greatly prefer my HR10 to my HR20. The only two features I like better on the HR20 are being able to do guide/menu stuff within a recorded program, and one touch recording. Otherwise the HR10 is better in every single way.
That being said, when D* launches their 40+ channels next year, they will be MPEG-4. If you want 4,6,and 12 over satellite and can't get OTA reception, you have to get the HR20. Your window of not needing the HR20 for the majority of HD from D* is closing more and more every day.

I'll be switching from my BELOVED H10 to the EVIL H20 when they pry it from my cold dead hands.......
or until they offer significantly more HD channels;)

It's not that bad, Matt.

If I get a HR20 from D* can I keep the three lnb dish until it gets a little warmer to have the AT9 or AU9 dish installed?
The only thing the 5 lnb dish gets me in the local HD right? At least until more national hd channels are up. Or do I want two lines going to the box (currently only have 1)?
Thanks
Edit: Actually I have two lines coming into the house from the dish. One goes to main tv box and other goes to master bedroom. There is no switch in the basement?

The HR20 will work with the 3 LNB dish. The only drawback is you will not get the HD locals over the satellite. When summer comes have them come out and swap out your dish so you can get the HD locals over the satellite and the HD programming that will converted to MPEG4 and all of the new HD programming.
But since the OTA will be ebabled it will be a non issue.
I have the HR20 & 2 HR10 and I love the HR20 ALOT more.
The DTivo are old news.

Did anyone in here receive the 0x104 download yet?

What effect will having only two lines coming down from the dish to the basement have? Isn't there supposed to be 3 going to some type of switch?

DirecTV has opened a window tonight 12/15/2006 from 10pm until 12:30am to download software to enable the over-the-air tuners in the HR20-700.
You must hit the red reboot button and key 0 2 4 6 8 at the **first** WELCOME screen and it will download.
This is for tonight ONLY.

Does anyone in this area actually have the update yet? I for one am becoming increasingly more ****ed!
Is OXFA the current software on the H20-700. I have had mine since first released and have gotten several updates and force downloads at least once a week just hoping for the new software.

I have the update got it through their window 0x10B and it is stable and OTA is good but the tuners are touchy! I love finally having 58 in HD!

Me too. (Although my OTA is rock solid)
Forcing the download will do no good.
Some of us got 0x10B (and predecessors) through a special arrangement.
The nationwide rollout should happen soon.

The upgrade finally came for me on Wed 12/20. When I turned the box on it was hung and had to be reset. After a reset everything is ok and software is updated. FINALLY!
