The new Optoma HD70, 720p DLP projector is due out the end of September. There's a link to the specs at Visualapex.com. These are exciting times the way projector prices have been falling. I can't wait for reviews of this baby.

Do DLP projectors create rainbows like DLP RPTVs?

Rainbows don't affect many people. But if you see them on DLP RPTV's, I think you'll see them on a DLP projector also.

Yes, DLP projectors will also produce the rainbow effect, for those who are susceptible to it.
Even if you do notice rainbows, there's a good chance that you'll see them less and less over time. I used to see them constantly, but now I probably see them only about once a night or less.
Under $1K for a 720p projector is a fantastic price. I miss using my X1, even though it only had VGA resolution, and I have a 50" HDTV now. There's nothing quite like watching movies on a 70"+ screen, not to mention video games.
I may have to try and think of a way to convince the wife that a projector would make a fantastic supplement to our TV.

I've had my X1 for 2 years with 106" screen. I use it for DVD's and HDTV. Did you sell your X1 or what?

Did you sell your X1 or what? No, I took it down after I got my HDTV, since the TV didn't leave enough room to also put up the screen. It's just laying around now, I can't think of a use for it. The screen is the only hassle I can think of with a projector.
I had lots of fun playing Xbox games on it. Halo and Morrowind were especially great on it. It would be fun to set it up in a dedicated game room, but I don't have an extra room, and I'd really miss having it hooked up to the surround sound system.

Unfortunately I'm one of the few that can see rainbows. This does sound like a good deal for everyone else.

I am also one who sees rainbows. However, many of the newer DLP projectors have color wheels that operate over 4x faster than earlier models. I still saw rainbows on 2x color wheels but I have yet to see them on anything 4x or faster.

There are some models out there that use the 3 chip system with a beam splitter just like LCD/RPTV's do, this elimates any possiblity of rainbows. (However I'm one of those that have never seen the rainbow...been over the rainbow but never seen it.)

The 3 chip DLP's are great, but you're talking thousands of dollars more.

Nice!! We'll have to see how much I can get for that 480p projector of mine.
