View Full Version : For Fox's Earl and Chuck... Who can recieve Digital 6?
Tom Snyder
11-17-2002, 04:48 PM
I wanted to dedicate a single thread so they have one place to see who can and who cannot pickup Digital 6 over the air so they can update their coverage map, which only shows a single viewer in Menomonee Falls.
Please post: Whether or not you get a watchable signal, Rough street location, antenna, STB/Tuner Info, and if you have a way to measure it, what signal strength. (Obviously, post only if you have a way to pick up OTA signals)
I'll kick it off...

I used to be able to get a 100% signal before WISN went online, but now I rarly get more than 15 to 25 percent, which results in nothing but chunks of pixelated blocks.
For some reason I don't understand, I was able to get 65% out of it today with very touchy rotor adjustments, and I actually could watch the Packers get embarassed by the Vikes.
It really is a shame that so few are able to see that amazing Fox Widescreen coverage. It is the best Pro Football picture you can get right now.
Unfortunatly for Fox affiliates it's going to look pretty shabby up against MNF next year though. You would think they would want to capitalize on it this year while they have the advantage.

I used to be able to get it before WISN and WTMJ went full time (when either was on the air I couldn't).
Now I cannot receive it on either antenna or receiver.
I have a highgain antenna at 50' with preamp and another at 40' without preamp.
3 blocks west of downtown Cedarburg.

No surprise that up here in (just south of) Oostburg I don't get them. I have a roof-top antenna with a preamp.
I get CBS without a problem and I believe they are at a lower power. Of course their transmitter is up on their main tower.

This is true for

Between the 3 antenna's I get all other Milwaukee HDTV channels at nearly 100%

I could not get a signal until I moved my Double Bow Tie antenna to the attic. I then got a 70 signal strength on my RCA DTC-100 at 60th and Wells here in Wauwatosa. The day WISN went live with their signal, FOX got knocked down to a solid 22 signal strength which is a "weak signal" according to the DTC-100.

Near Prospect and North on the east side I can receive them if I move the RS double bowtie to the third floor window, turn it on it’s side and point it exactly right. It is watchable but breaks up every now and then.. it’s not a very strong signal.

From North Lake Wisconsin with an amplified rooftop antenna and rotor - - channel 33 from Michigan analog comes in with a lot of snow. No Fox 33 though.
Nothing here, but I'm pretty much straight west and I have my antenna pointed southeast instead of east. Its on the roof, so I don't intend to change it -- well, maybe if Packers and widescreen go together again.

Nothing from just southeast of Miller Park in the City of Milwaukee. I have an antenna on the side of the house about 16-18 feet from the ground. I've tried the RS double bow-tie and three other antennas with never a peep from Fox 6, though all other stations come in great.

I pick them up with a Yagi in the attic pointed directly at them. I am in Southeast side of Germantown. They did the Vikings/Packer game in widescreen and it looked good. (Not as good as the CBS HD college games but much better than analog FOX 6).
Malcolm in the middle and others looked good too. Not HD, but a big improvement over standard analog TV. If they could just double the power I would be happy because I still get an occasional jitter.

Have never seen Faux 6 on either receiver. Low end Roof antenna. BTW I am at 27th and College in the actual City of Milwaukee... Isn't that the city of license for "6"

Earl has been looking at these and gave me the following input:
Yes, I have looked at the results and I am not totally surprised. As I mentioned, the FCC standard of coverage (41 dBu over the city of license) is not going to blow a hole in anyone's receiver. WITI-DT is compliant with this standard presently. It absolutely requires a directional outdoor antenna (i.e. Yagi, preferably with rotator, the higher the better) anywhere except within close proximity of the transmitter. Losses through the roof and walls of a structure are significant at UHF, even in an attic. So an indoor antenna, no matter how good it is, might only be able to sniff 1/10th the signal available on the roof. Surprisingly, community antennas may not be much better. This is because of the numerous splits or "branches" of the antenna downlead necessary to feed multiple sets. The potential for in-band "suck-outs" and other signal impairments is geometrically related to the number of splits. This is why conventional, analog cable systems sometimes provide less than perfect pictures and sound; especially older systems that don't use fiber to get the signal very near to the subscriber before doing coax cable splits. Well-placed, high quality (some are not!) amplifiers can mitigate the losses, but do nothing to improve the "flatness" of the spectrum passband delivered to any given set. If this "flatness" is not preserved, the multi-tap equalizers in the DTV receiver run out of steam trying to correct the problem, while also trying to cope with any multipath (ghosting) from the antenna, which is their main target. The result can be plenty of signal, but no picture and no sound. BTW, this is why some manufacturers have increased the number of taps in more recent DTV receivers, which has enhanced performance compared to the first generation of DTV receivers.
Your earlier observation that there are probably areas within the contours shown on my map that do not get at least 41 dBu is absolutely correct. The prediction software (I use ComStudy 2.2 from RadioSoft [www.radiosoft.com]) which generates the maps uses FCC probability formulas for determining the contours. Only limited terrain information is incorporated, mainly ground elevation. Local conditions, such as trees, buildings, and other "clutter" are not considered. So reception within the contour is really statistically expressed as "reception at a certain percentage of locations, for a certain percentage of time," both percentages being less than 100%. Other techniques, such as computationally-intensive Longley-Rice modelling [also a feature of ComStudy], can give a more precise indication of signal strength at a particular location [useful for interference analysis], but can't make up for the fact that reception is nowhere near uniform within the FCC contours. I don't know of any good software that can accurately predict the multipath at any given site.
Best regards,
Earl

I'm located near Ruby Isle in Brookfield (North & Calhoun), with an outside Stealth antenna and a Samsung SIR T151 STB.
I have, at times, received a picture of sorts from Faux 6, but now all I get are a few blips and a "No Signal" message.
When will it end? Stay tuned.

I live in Germantown, Hwy 45/Mequon road area and used to get FAUX 6 with a 60-68 signal until recently. I first noticed on Sunday checking for the Packer game and there was no picture. The same has been true ever since with signal strength fluctuating from 20-40.
Could this be due to 34-1 moving to 12-1?

I had a Sony XBR2 for two weeks and it got Fox six with a solid signal. I live in Richfield at Hwy167 and Scenic Dr. This is with an attic mounted RS 210 yagi. I can not get it now with a SIRT165 using the RS or an outdoor mounted Silver Sensor.

Was this before November 1st when WISN-DT went on the air....they are adjacent channel and wiped it out for most of us (yeah the 3 or so that used to be able to get it).
*Samsung SIR-T151.
*Shorewood, Kensington/Maryland (Approx 8 miles from Fox studios)
*Put up a Winegard Platinum antenna in the attic as close as I could get it to the north wall pointing directly at WITI studios.
Got a clear signal last night with no dropouts. However, had trouble receiving other stations so had to reposition thus losing WITI signal. At least I know I can reposition it for packer games. Is WITI sending through widescreen still or is that on the backburner until their main tower is ready?

With the antenna I have sever multi-path and will only get 100 on WTMJ with occasional breakups. 10, 12, and 58 are all between 60-85. If I move the antenna outside on the porch facing the towers though, all signals will shoot to 100 and 6 at that point will shoot to a rock solid 45-55, which because it is so stable is 100% watchable.

It's widescreen and well worth moving your antenna for. They have also been doing a better job sending the other widescreen shows. Sure they still have problems on their end, but it's worth watching, in my opinion.
