The Federal Communications Commission denied requests for additional time to build digital-television stations from Paxson Communications Corp. and other broadcasters Monday.

Paxson asked to double the time allowed for extensions granted to 22 of its stations from six months to one year. The FCC said it had no authority to grant extensions longer than six months. The commission noted, however, that a second six-month extension is permitted if Paxson can justify another reprieve.

The FCC also refused to lift admonishments levied against KBSI-DT Cape Girardeau, Mo.; WWAY-DT Wilmington, N.C.; and WTJR-DT Qunicy, Ill., for unjustified failure to meet the May 1, 2002, digital-TV-construction deadline
