OTA HD questions?

OK - so I scrounged a old Hughes HD sat receiver just to see if I could get HD with my antenna in G'town. Holy s#*^ this really works. Now understand - alls I'm doing is passing this thru the Hughes box into a definetly non-HD 5 year old Panasonic TV. yah-yah - I know there are a lot better displays - but wow - the picture on 36-1 is simply shockingly good!
Have a few questions: I get good stable pictures on the following:
WTMJ 4-1, MPTV 10-1 thru 10-7,,MPTV 2 36-1,WISN 12-1,WCGV 24-1,28-1 is this the same as 4-1?, What I find odd is that I get lots of stuttering and pixelation artifacts on WDJT 1-1 ,18-1,and 30-1. Don't get 6-1 at all - but apperantly have a lot of company there ( wait 'till June?).
Most of my questions are antenna related. House is wired with RG-6QS and snap and seals. What kind of bandwidth do I need for splitters? I am loath to try amps - since my experience in the analog world has been pretty bad ,but it's a brave new world - are there any antenna amps that can help in terms of getting say 1-1 and 18-1 to be stable?
Because I am rental scum I need to abide by my landlord's wishes - which means no outside antennas. Anybody tried the TERK amplified antenna? Because I do have a attic to work with absolute miniature size is not a requirment - any other antennas worth looking at? anyone know of a on-line source for owners manual for Hughes HIRD E-8?

For what it's worth, I tried two different amps from RadioShack in order to get 6-1 (We WERE planning on an HD Superbowl party):

The easy one for $30, simply insert inline before the TV and plug it in.

The hard one, for $60 which is actually two parts, an unpowered part which goes in close to the antenna and a second indoor part which requires AC.

I just took the more expensive model back because it would still not pull 6-1 at all. The $30 model has improved my OTA signal enough to receive Fox, but it still breaksup fairly frequently (so we've cancelled the party). My suggestion would be to pick one up (look for the HDTV logo) and hang on to the receipt just in case it doesn't help as much as you would like.
