Channel Numbers

I fail to understand the current channel numer scheme, I was wondering if any one could explaine it. WTMJ is listed as 28-1 but we can pick it up as 28-1 or 4-1, and CBS is listed as 46-1 but can be picked up as 1-1, why not 58-1??

Can some one explain this???

Since that data stream is programmable at the station the individual station has to decide what it will present as. 4 would probably use 4-1 since they have promoted that brand. 58 is more problamatic. The FCC want the channels in the 50's back for auction so 58 will probably cease to exist in 3 to 6 years. Do you promote that number or start a new one.

If this is true, then why does the WTMJ Digital Logo that they put up say "WTMJ Digital 28" if they are going to use 4-1??

Just wondering?
