I posted in another forum here about this, but it was slightly off-topic and, i figure, likely to be overlooked. I have to date been unable to get the upconverted Monday Night Football signal on cable channel 512. I don't know if they're late flipping the switch and I get impatient, or if it's just not passed through. What I do see is the picture with the bars on the sides, and I'm not going to watch that. I bought a 16:9 set for a reason, and I plan to use all the real estate available, and I don't find the stretch modes on my TV too distracting.

Does anyone have any experiences with this?

This is the way it is supposed to be. MNF is not an HD production yet...upconverts from Standard Definition are broadcast as 480p with a 4:3 aspect ratio..thus the black bars.....however I personally find that the quality of the picture and color ect is much better than the picture on 12 analog.

So this is being done intentionally? Yikes. I just can't watch it with those irritating bars there. I find it extremely distracting. Do all upconverts appear this way? And why can't the signal be stretched as well as upconverted by ABC?

Technically, it could be stretched, and it has been tried in some markets. But there is no "correct" solution to the problems they face, and most people believe the current method is the best compromise.

There was a thread here about this a couple of weeks ago that you may want to read.
