Freeway Traffic Cameras

Did anyone read in today's Metro section of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel about WMVS-DT planning in the future to add to the multicasting channels, Freeway Traffic Cameras?

It is a article written by the Road-Traffic ("Road Warrior") editor who writes a weekly column on Mondays about road construction, road info, as well as people's comments regarding traffic and road construction.

Anyways, the management of WMVS-DT is planning to add the WisDOT Traffic Cameras. If you already notice both 10-5 and 10-6 carry the same weather maps, the only difference is the audio. I am assuming they will probably drop the weather on one of the channels and replace it with the Freeway Traffic Cameras.

Summerfun......nothing is taken away...I don't mean to be rude but pay attention. This is on digital 10 (ch 8) WMVS which is always multicasting, their sister station digital 36 (ch 35) is full time HD.

Guess I jumped the gun a little. Just frustrated about the multicasting issue taking bandwidth away from HD like happened this past week with Ch 58.

Hard to keep track of all the W... whatevers and the OTA channel numbers. As a TWC customer I am used to following cable channel numbers.

I don't understand running the DOT cameras on 10-5 & 10-6. This is easily availible on the internet, just as weather radar is. Why not run NASA's channel there. Much harder for most people to get and defininetly different.

NASA channel can only be received if you have a dish, the really large one or the smaller DTV or Dishnetwork kind...why MPTV doesn't use this very educational channel in its "-this" digital lineup is beyond me. Hoe many PBS channels are necessary (or traffic cams?)

I have begged TWC for years to get the NASA channel even before I got rid of my sat equipment and I still miss it...much better than that insipid WMLW and its reruns...but that is my opinion.:(

TWC probably won't carry NASA because they are not allowed to charge for it. :rolleyes:

You just get a screen grab, not "live" motion. When there's "action" happening, I, for one, would like to tune those in and watch real-time.

Ellis, I vote yes for the traffic cams.

PS - NASA is free on D* with a 2 or 3 LNB setup.

give me traffic cams... will I watch them? probably not regularyly.. but right now 10 is giving each channel around 4Mbps... they can squeeze one or two more channels in there and still have it all look decent... not like it will affect WMVT at all...

I guess I would welcome the traffic cams. But if I had a choice between the NASA channel and a traffic cam being offered on a PBS multi cast. Need I say what I would choose? I am supprised that our local commercial channels havn't jumped on it as a side bar to their news casts and do it on one of their multi casts. I'm sure WDJT would try and find 1 or 2 more megahertz to fit it in. Since they are one of the few right now that are multi casting. It could be a public service promo for them. It's not like those traffic cams are anything better than a cheap security cam you can by at Menards anyway. So they shouldn't take a lot of band width.


Also a question for Gregg. I believe you or someone may have answered this some time ago, and if so just point me in the direction as to where I can read it for myself. The question is, what happens to the present frequency slots that are being used by the analog transmissions once the mandatory switch takes effect in 2006? It would be nice if MPTV could keep 10 and 36 and go digital with multi cast on those with more programming like Kevin suggested.:)

The Channels above 51 and some of the low VHF channels are going away. Otherwise the stations have their choice of keeping their old assignment or using their new assignment.

The entire 700 MHz segment is being reclaimed for Wireless Services of all sorts. There are commercial segments to be auctioned off, a Public Safety segment and the already auctioned off Guard Bands between the two. The guard bands are to protect Public Safety from having the problems right now with interference from commercial carriers...mainly Nextel but some interfence from the original Cellular carriers.

Channels 52-69 are being auctioned off. Stations will have to decide which of the two channels they plan to stay digital on and which channel they will give back when analog shuts down. Some stations will change from analog to digital on their analog channels and give back their digital and some will stay on their digital channel and give back the analog. The stations that have their analog channel between 52-69 and their digital channel is below 52, then they are pretty much stuck on that channel until one of the other channels open up. If a station has both channels above 52, then they will have to find a channel below 52 after analog shuts down.
