Well WVCY-DT is now broadcasting programming on their digital channel. I have a solid 70 signal strength on the HiDTV Pro receiver card on my PC, and after rescan it comes in on my RCA also but only at a signal strength of about 50. However the picture quality is horrible, it's worse than their analogue on 30. It's full of ghosts which leads me to believe that they are receiving their transmitted signal from 30 and using that to feed the 22 transmitter.

Well at least I can receive them versus Fox6 and the others that aren't even on the air.

30 has never been known for their picture quality. And, I guess people don't watch it for that anyway.

But with his budget, for Vic to beat both Sinclair AND FOX to market should just be an embarassment to them both.

I have to say that 22.1 has 6.1 beat for worst OTA digital picture quality for now. The sad part is that it's not a complete blowout, in my opinion.

22.1 had a problem with their audio signals as well. Just coming out of the right channel. If they are mono, they should move their audio signal to the center channel, in my opinion.

They did beat our local WB, UPN, and PAX (none of which returned my emails) in getting a signal on the air, so I have to give them some credit.

Vic did a much simplier install of the antenna and transmitter. He only put up low power line and antenna. I also heard that he located the transmitter on the tower. While Sinclair is going to groud mount and install full power line and antenna.

I'm glad he found a way to do it on the cheap.

It would have been tragic for the mandated migration to digital to cause the demise of religious broadcasters. People may disagree with his theology, but in a world where broadcasting has become nothing but a profit machine for the Fox's and Sinclairs of the world, there's just something good and right about this last bastion of broadcast territory that's being run based on conviction, passion and mission.

Dropped this email to Vic Eliason and his VCY staff.

I want to congratulate you on your new digital station, and beating UPN, PAX, WB (and maybe even Fox, there signal is unusable) to the air in the Greater Milwaukee Area. You signal strength is excellent at my home in Cedarburg. However I do have a question and maybe a supposition.

WVCY-DT's video is poorer quality than channel 30's analogue signal. There is ghosting which is a technical impossibility with ATSC/8VSB. Are you collecting the signal to transmit via a receiver directly off the air from channel 30 rather than feeding your encoder with your normal video feed?

Just curious, and you have gotten much better publicity than the afore mentioned stations on the local bulletin board for DTV/HDTV http://www.milwaukeehdtv.org

Keep up the good work!

Couldn't agree with you more Tom.

Say, should I be able to see 22.1? I currently do not have capture of that signal yet. Any ideas on coverage area? What power levels they are running?

I'm bouncing around a 79-93 signal on Hughes E86 near Mitchell International. PQ is poorer than analog 30 as noted by Gregg. I wouldn't say horrible, but light ghosting is evident.

Gregg posted a reply from Andy Eliason in the Latest News forum... Good information there: http://www.milwaukeehdtv.org/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000052.html
