I got junk mail today from voom tv. They are claiming 39 HDTV channels. (but 21 are their own) They want $750 for the satellite install and receiver. Are they nuts? If you want to spend $750 you can get DTV equipment for about $500. Me personally, I like TW for just the box rental charge of $6.95.

Shoot...back in the early days of Directv, before satellite really took off, $750 was about what you would've payed for a two room hook-up without local channels.
Any new service or technology is expensive at first roll-out...DVD players were on average around $500 when they first started showing up in noticeable numbers. Early adopters of technology usually bear the brunt of the costs of such new things. Give it time and the price will drop. If you could get a Voom set-up for what you can get a three room Directv set-up for, it definitely sounds interesting.
And....cable does have it's advantages, but is nowhere close to being the last word on latest, and inventive technology or cutting edge.....

I picked up the brochure for Voom at Sears. It does look pretty cool. I'm getting sick of waiting for Dish to get their act together. Does anyone know if Voom is up and running? I might be willing to fork over the $750.... Anybody have their service yet?

I looked a little closer into getting VOOM. I stumbled across this:
http://www.satelliteguys.us/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3043
"Facts about VOOM HD Channels
Newsbyte - Only shows the Weather map 24 hrs. No HD news. It will start on 1/04.
Cinema 10 - Repeats the Movies every three days. With 10 HD movie channels and with each channel getting 3 movies to run on 3 consecutive days, in effect they are showing 30 movies a month to watch. Also, these movies are not the latest ones. If you have seen the type of movies in HDNET Movies, these Cinema 10 movies are the same type.
Animania - Repeats every hour the same program.
WorldSport - most events are not live but taped. So far, Spanish Soccer and Japanese World Series.
Monsters, Epics, Rush, Rave, Ultra, Treasure, Gallery, & MOOV are showing repeats like Discovery HD Theater.
Show HD has a lot of breakups and sound loss. The same can be said about Discovery HD Theater."
Hmm. That doesn't sound too appealing to me.

Right now there are just not enough programing to fill all those HD channels, unless you like repeats.

In time the programming will come. What I think the interesting part of Voom....the ability to show so many different HD programs with out loss of PQ. Thats a lot of bandwidth the Dish or Directv does not have yet.....until Dish's new superdish and Directv's new satellites.
I wouldn't mind checking it out but, the $750 price tag is just a little steep right now for me....
