ESPN hopes to extend its reach--and its value to MSOs--by adding two new networks to its lineup in 2003: ESPN HD, a high-definition simulcast of ESPN, and ESPN Deportes, a 24-hour Spanish-language sports network. Both nets are expected to be offered primarily on a tiered basis.
Concurrently with ESPN's announcement that ESPN HD would launch in April 2003 with 100 live telecasts of select major league games, ESPN sibling ABC added wattage by announcing it would broadcast the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup, the NBA finals and Monday Night Football in high definition in 2003.
