CBS 58 MILWAUKEE ANNOUNCES BROADCAST LAUNCH FOR HDTV SET FOR THIS MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2002
Station plans to set national precedent by multicasting up to four games simultaneously in digital television and high definition during the NCAA Tournament
MILWAUKEE, WI-CBS 58 Milwaukee announces its broadcast launch of digital television (DTV) on March 11 at 5:00pm. Sports fans with DTV televisions or set-top converters will have the opportunity to view portions of the NCAA Tournament in high definition (HDTV) on CBS 58 Milwaukee. The station also plans to offer HD viewers the option of choosing between up to four of the early NCAA Tournament games simultaneously through multicasting technology. The CBS Network also plans to broadcast portions of the early tournament rounds and the Final Four in high definition.
"Through the use of this new technology, we will have the option of either broadcasting games in high definition with great clarity or broadcast multiple games simultaneously, giving fans the choice of which game they wish to watch," commented Station Manager Jim Hall.
The official high definition channel number for CBS 58 designated by the FCC is Channel 46. Those viewers with newer DTV receivers offering viewers with HDTV-compatible television sets the opportunity to view programs at 1080 lines of resolution, versus todayÕs standard 480 lines of resolution or multiple programs in Standard Definition (SDTV). The clarity and depth of picture set a precedent for the television broadcast industry.
The CBS Network is ahead of the technological curve compared to the other major networks in its HDTV broadcasts. Currently, CBS offers some daytime soap operas, plus most prime time programs to its HDTV viewers. Shows already broadcasting in high definition on a regular basis include: The Young and the Restless, The King of Queens, Yes, Dear, Everybody Loves Raymond, Becker, Family Law, JAG, The Guardian, Judging Amy, Touched by an Angel, The Agency, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and other special programs.
